It goes without saying that one takes pride in their work, but nothing beats the excitement of public holidays, especially long weekends. However, most of us fail to make the most of them when they come around.

Meanwhile, savvier employees have probably planned out their holidays for the year. These employees believe that leveraging public holidays would result in a more fulfilling vacation.

“How is that possible?” you might ask. Well, the solution is simple. All you have to do is plan ahead. Planning ahead allows you to maximise your downtime and save on expenses. You’ll get to pick suitable dates and the best of deals online.

That’s not all, planning ahead lets us leverage paid leave by turning a long weekend into a longer vacation. Plan ahead for 2022 and your dream vacation might just become a reality!

Employee’s Entitlement to Holidays

Effective 1 April 2019, some amendments to the Employer Act had been implemented to ensure that all employees are compensated during the holidays.

First, staff required to work on a public holiday are entitled to an extra day’s salary at the basic rate of pay. Moreover, the employer and employee may mutually agree to substitute a public holiday for another working day. The employer has the additional option of granting time-off-in-lieu, based on a mutually agreed number of hours, for working on a public holiday. So, start plotting your vacation dates and maximize your downtime by utilizing your annual leave entitlements. It is an opportunity for employees to take a step back from work and de-stress.

Additionally, it also benefits both employers and employees as positive employee morale benefits an organization’s performance. Remember, well-rested employees increase productivity!
