5 Disruptive HR Tech Trends That SMEs Can’t Miss

Samantha

Are you working for an SME? Chances are you may not have as big an HR budget as larger MNCs. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to lag behind. There are a growing number of affordable HR vendors catering to SMEs that will enable you to make your HR operations more efficient. Who knows? These solutions might even help you overtake the competition. That’s why it pays to stay on top of HR tech trends. Here are 5 that you need to keep an eye on.

1. HR “self-service” and the rise of user experience

HR software decisions are usually made by the management and HR administrators for them to run HR functions and keep employee records. However, most HR software have moved towards “employee self-service”, which means that employees use these systems by themselves. Thus, a successful implementation hinges on how easy it is for not just the HR department, but also other employees to perform their regular HR tasks. Employees from Finance and Marketing might have little patience to keep up with tedious HR tasks that might take up too much of their time. Don’t forget, we all have our own to-do list to clear!

So to ensure that employees actually use the system, it is important that the software is user-friendly. Applying for leave, checking their pay slips or clocking in to work should be easily done anytime, anywhere, and on any platform they want.

2. Rise of mobile apps: Access your HR anywhere, anytime

According to Google, 24% of our daily media interactions occur on a computer, while 38% of our daily media interactions occur on a smartphone. This shows how employees are more likely to access HR applications on their phones if they had the chance. We will likely see Singapore ride on this trend quicker because the city-state is one of the top smartphone adopters in the world, with an 85% mobile penetration rate. To gain traction amongst employees, the best way is to use a mobile-enabled HR software.

Also take note that having a mobile-optimized website is not enough. Would you use Facebook on your mobile as much if there wasn’t a dedicated application that made it so easy to view, comment, like, and share? There’s no reason for people not to have an application that they can use to easily take care of all their HR needs anytime, anywhere. In fact, HR applications, with their user-friendly interface, have the potential to speed up HR tasks and processes, freeing up employees to focus on doing their work better.

Mobile-run HR applications also make sense for other reasons. For one, various HR functions work much better on mobile devices. Applying leave would be so much more convenient, if you are at home or away from your work computer. Mobile applications also make it possible to track time and attendance for employees that work outside the office, which is common as the workforce gets more mobile and decentralized.

3. The Cloud forecast remains

The move towards cloud software is hardly a new trend. However, based on our research on HR practices in Singapore, only 28% of employers are familiar with Cloud solutions. This is surprising considering the many benefits.

One of the main benefits is the ability to set-up and update the system instantly by your vendor over the cloud. This removes the problem of suffering downtime and additional costs when systems are upgraded every few months. You can also rest easy knowing that you are always using the most up-to-date version of the software.

Cloud-based software also allows employees and managers to access information anywhere and anytime, through any device. This gives enormous flexibility to HR staff and employees.

4. Data Analytics: Translating HR data into useful information

Every day, you are collecting rich data about your employees, be it the time they reach work, the number of days and period when they go on leave, or the salary they receive. Individually, these have no meaning. However, when aggregated and analyzed, this information will reveal much about your workforce and give you insights on how you can improve workplace efficiency. Thus, if you want your business running to the best of its ability, you need to have the right data analytics tools to be able to translate the data from your HR systems into useful insights that you can use to improve your business processes.

5. Integration of different HR solutions

HR functions vary widely, from administrative work like leave applications to people-centric employee engagement. Each of these functions require different software ranging from HRMS to talent management systems. With the rise of large ERP vendors like Oracle and SAP, much of these functions can now be consolidated into a single system. However, using a single consolidated system has its disadvantages.

What we’re seeing now is that new disruptive technology usually originates from small innovators that specialize in a single solution, rather than big ERP vendors. So with all the disruption going on, the best thing for businesses is to maintain the flexibility of switching to the newest innovation in the market. The good news is, with cloud technology, it is becoming even easier to integrate multiple solutions together.

We hope that with these five trends in mind, you’ll be able to transform your HR processes to become more efficient. Having efficient processes all across your company is a must if you want to stay competitive in today’s fast-paced business environment. If you haven’t been evaluating your HR technology recently, you should start doing so now.
